The Witch of Blackbird Pond (By Elizabeth George Speare)

I just read The Witch of Blackbird Pond for school. That's because I'm studying English Colonization. I would give it 8 stars. I would recommend it to 10-year-olds and up. "And up" includes grown-ups. My Mommy read it (not for the first time) just a few weeks ago. This is what the back cover says:

"There was something strange about this country of America, something they all seemed to share and understand and she did not.
Kit has grown up on the island of Barbados, loved and pampered by her grandfather. But after his death, she must leave. It's not proper for a sixteen-year-old girl to live by herself. She's heard stories about her aunt and uncle who live in the colony of Connecticut. These are the only relatives Kit knows of. So, alone and desperate, she sets sail to live with them in New England.
When she arrives, Kit is shocked by the gray, damp landscape, but even more stunned by the Puritanical lifestyle of her uncle's household. Fitting in is not easy- until she meets Hannah Tupper, an old woman who lives alone and is the only person who lets Kit be herself.
But the colonists believe Hannah is a witch. If they discover Kit is her friend, they will think the same of her. Kit must choose: should she abandon her only friend, or stand by her and risk losing everything?"

This is how I would summarize it:
Kit is a girl from Barbados. Her grandfather has died, so she needs a place to go. She knows of family in the colony of Connecticut. So she goes.
Even there, Kit feels alone. Then she meets Hannah Tupper. Kit, Hannah, a girl named Prudence, and a boy from the ship she came to America on (called the Dolphin) named Nat, help each other, and become good friends. But some people think Hannah and Kit are witches. Kit saves Hannah, but someone needs to save Kit: Nat and Prudence. They have to try!

For school, I wrote down some questions the book brought up. I'll give mine, and you can give any of your own, too! Also, feel free to give your own answers- I'll write mine backwards (so they're there- but you can think of your own without mine getting in the way!). Here are the questions:
Is it okay to be friends with people that not only do others dislike- they disapprove of? and- Is it okay to do something you were banned to do- if it's because of friendship and to help someone?
 Here are my answers:

  1. Well written Jaina! Very clever to write your thoughts backwards so your readers could think of the answers to the questions you posed. I enjoyed the discussions we had about those questions here at home. Good thinking kiddo!
    Love,
    Mommy
